Holiday spirit is something we see year after year, some have snow and some don’t but you always hear the bells ringing, the smells of spice, and kids laughter. Its a cozy time of year where family comes together even after all the hustle and bustle the last minute shopping it is still a wonderful feeling.
Growing up as a child my home was very traditional. One of my favorite holiday spirit traditions was on Thanksgiving all us kids were so excited to do the cousins drawing. Where we each wrote our name on a small piece of paper and put it in a hat. We all secretly wanted to draw our favorite cousin or the one that always came with the best gift. We would draw names and that is who we were getting gift for on Christmas. It was always a secret so it would remain a surprise. Back then shopping was so limited. We only had 30 days and if you were anything like my family it was more like 3-5 days since we would procrastinate until the week of.
Shopping now is so different we now have moved passed dial up and into times of click here click there and ship it to our homes. Heck we can even order online and have it wrapped and shipped to the person we are gifting. We do not even have to have wrapping skills anymore. Another Tradition
The energy during the holidays should feel good. When you get together with family there should be smiles and laughter. Nowadays times have changed and you find that less families are getting together for the holidays. Some are doing holidays via Zoom or some other online communication platform. I will always remember after Thanksgiving dinner just before everyone was about to head on home the family would first make our Christmas plans and then we would turn on Garth Brooks “Friends in Low Places” and we would stand in a circle our arms around one another and sing at the top of our lungs. The level of energy would with out fail bring me to tears every time. It was a wonderful feeling and a memory I would never forget.
Remembering Spirit in the Holidays
Coming into my Grandmothers house use to smell so good. My aunt would be at the stove singing her favorite Christmas carol while my other aunt would sing-a-long while picking the greens that she just bought from the market. Mmm Smell all of those cakes in the oven sure wish Corkspin was a thing back then. Remember Transformers? Optimus Prime was one of my favorites. I would sneak through the house while they cooked and try to find the presents to see if they had bought me one. Man I would have been the happiest kid ever had I been able to open up a Optimus Prime DIY.
Traditional Family
My family was very traditional and I will say this If Country Carter Meats with their nutrient dense beef were anywhere close to St Louis around Christmas back in those days we would probably have a few more good memories to share. We would attend Church on Sunday and my Grandmother and I were sharp as we headed to Church. Although she made out pretty well with her will and dedication to hard work she would have been a proud Titanium member of Savings Highway Global if she were breathing today. She didnt say much during the Christmas season and I ask her, as she was staring off into space “Grandma what are you thinking about?” She looked at me and smiled with so much love, it was as if my higher power had painted it on her face and allowed it to touch my spirit. She said “I am trying to figure out how to make another dollar.” She then immediately went back into her meditation.
